Quality Bamboo Fly Rods and Classic Tackle

If you are interested in products, please reach out to us via email. The products available are as listed below and yet unlisted inventory. Please contact us so we may fit a rod to your needs from our inventory.

Wanigas Bamboo Fly Rods

Michigan is the home of some of this country's most innovative and historically important bamboo rod manufacturers; James Heddon & Sons Company was one of the leading commercial bamboo rod makers, building upwards of 100,000 rods in their lifetime.  L. L. Dickerson and Paul H. Young were two of the most historically great innovators in bamboo rod taper designs. Many of their rod tapers are frequently copied today, because of their known effective casting and fishing qualities. R. W. Summers is the direct descendant of these two fine builders and still produces the iconic classic Michigan bamboo rod.

We source rods from owners, estates and new builds. Most of our inventory is new or near mint (NM) in condition (what we refer to as, "closet queens", purchased but unused). Excellent and Excellent + rods, are in very lightly used or lawn cast only condition.

If one of the listed rods is of interest to you please contact us via email for a gallery of pictures for that rod and to ask specific questions. We prefer face-to-face real world communications. carl@wanigasrodcompany.com

Leon Hanson

  •  Leon started building rods in the late 1970’s. Since then he has quietly built some of the finest rods in the country. The quality of his work was so notable; it brought mention in Ernie Schwiebert's “Trout”. Ernie spoke of Garrison, then Carmichael and then Hanson as a line of succession.
  •  Leon’s depth of thinking applied to the construction of his rods, is worthy of recognition. His tapers cast sublimely, as only an expert caster can translate into bamboo.
  •  After 2008 Hanson made a reputation in being at the forefront of innovation in hollow building rods. These hollow rods are much sought after throughout the world for their innovation and craftsmanship. His total production of hollow rods numbers less than 200.
